TI: Time variations of the diffuse CO2 emissions on Mt. Etna (Italy) during 2004-05 eruption

AB: As common in active volcanoes, Mt. Etna is characterized by intense soil degassing in several parts of its edifice. (Boubron et al. 1996, Giammanco et al., 1995). In general, the main exhaling areas are located in correspondence of tectonic or volcano tectonic structures (Giammanco et al.,1998) and their regimen seems to be strictly related to the volcanic activity. To prove this hypothesis, for several reasons the studies carried out in these areas did not give any conclusive results (among them the very low measuring frequency). Since December 2002, a network for continuous monitoring of soil CO2 degassing was installed on Mt. Etna, a very active basaltic volcano located on the eastern part of Sicily (Italy). Today, the network is based on 10 remote stations which measure the soil CO2 flux from soils and the value of the principal meteorological parameters. These data are daily transmitted to the INGV-PA lab and automatically elaborated. The last eruption on Mt. Etna started at the end of 2004 and ended in January of 2005. It furnished very interesting data regarding the relationship between soil gas regimen in the flanks of the volcanic edifice and the volcanic activity. Data recorded by three of the four stations working at that time, highlighted a very strong increase in the soil CO2 flux up to two months before the eruption onset. The CO2 regimen remained at anomalous level for all eruptive period.
