Bezymianny Volcano is one of the most active volcanoes located on the Kamchatka Peninsula, Russia. Bezymianny erupts almost
biannually and for the past 40 years has followed the same basic eruption pattern. Eruptions start with the slow growth of
the lava dome followed by collapse which may lead to the formation of pyroclastic flows.
Utilizing a Forward Looking Infrared Radiometer (FLIR) thermal images were acquired in August of 2004 to measure the thermal
output of the volcano in order to gain a better understanding of lava dome growth processes at Bezymianny Volcano. Thermal
images were used to create a mosaic of the dome that was initially used to determine the temperature distribution on the lava
dome and the total thermal energy being emitted from the volcano. Analysis showed that even during periods of repose
Bezymianny still emits a significant amount of thermal energy, approximately 250 MW. Flow and weathering features are also
identified on the dome in the FLIR imagery. The combination of thermal flux and morphological features on the dome's surface
enables different dome processes to be distinguished from one another including lobe growth, fumarolic activity and
fracturing on the dome. Even though only one data set was available for processing the images did prove useful and will
allow comparisons to be made with thermal images acquired in years to come.
