New evidence from volcanic stratigraphy and archaelogical excavations provide key constraints on the mechanisms and the
effects of the explosive eruptions of Somma-Vesuvius and Campi Flegrei on the Neapolitan area, from the prehistory to the
modern times.
Relations between deposits and the associated effects on the environment, human settlements, animals and people have been
analyzed in order to constrain the zoning of the volcanic hazard.
The inferred mechanical and thermal effects on settlements and human remains, consistently with numerical simulations,
reveal that the whole Neapolitan district and Naples is exposed to high level of volcanic hazard both due to pyroclastic
density current and fallout.
A main result is that, due to its position between Vesuvius and Campi Flegrei, Naples is the most hazardous area being
affected both to the passage and emplacement of pyroclastic density current manly associated with Vesuvius eruption and
accumulation of fallout beds even exceeding 1 m in thickness from Campi Flegrei volcano.
Field evidence reveales also that huge secondary pyroclastic density current events related with the major explosive activity
of both Campi Flegrei and Vesuvius, have devastated a wide territory which is presently extensively urbanized including
Naples.
These results should be taken into account in current hazard assessment and planning for the Neapolitan area.
