TI: Real-time joint plot of deformation and cumulative seismicity as a tool for the monitoring of dike
stability

Dike intrusion in fractured media has been modeled using a boundary element code. Results have been successfully compared to
analytical prediction of the Effective Media Theory.
Average dike opening is found to increase with medium crack density. Observing that dike opening can be related to
dike-induced deformation and that crack density is joined to cumulative seismicity, a simple relation has been found to
describe dikes in stable equilibrium. Stable dikes are predicted to cause changes in deformation related through a power law
relationship to the cumulative seismicity they induce.
We present successful tests with data from several major intrusions. If both deformation and seismic monitoring are
continuously performed in an active volcanic area, the present method could be used to monitor dike stability.
