Unlike common hot vent fluids the fluid from the serpentinite hosted vents does not have enough buoyancy to create
hydrothermal plume. This would raise two questions. 1. How are microbes as well as larvae of hydrothermal benthos dispersed
with fluid? 2. In the exploration point of view, how do we search the fluid source if we detect fluid tail?
During the last two expeditions in the Lost City hydrothermal field (LCHF, 2003 R/V Atlantis, AT07-34 cruise and 2005 R/V
Ronald H. Brown, the redox (Eh) sensor clearly indicated presence of fluid in seawater through CTD, ABE (AUV), Alvin (DSV)
and Hercules (ROV) missions. The redox potential was measured by a Pt electrode and a reference electrode, which has Ag-AgCl
electrode in saturated KCl solution. The electrode voltage were logged through either converted analog voltage output (CTD
and ABE) or RS-232 base digital data transmission (Alvin and Hercules).
This presentation shows the spatial distribution of fluid dispersion around LCHF and would give us clue to solve questions.
