Aerosols make an important contribution to the heat balance of the Earth's atmosphere. However, a potentially more important
effect of atmospheric aerosols is in their role in the formation of cloud particles and precipitation. Field observations
of the effects of aerosols on clouds and precipitation will be critically reviewed. Suggestions will be made for studies to
further elucidate these effects.
