AB: The Tropospheric Emission Spectrometer (TES) onboard the Aura satellite will provide the first global profile measurements of tropospheric ozone and its photochemical precursors. We use the GEOS-CHEM global 3-D chemistry transport model to interpret the TES observations of tropospheric ozone. TES profile retrievals and computed tropospheric ozone columns from the global survey and special transect viewing modes during August-October 2004 are compared with model results for the same time period. The averaging kernels and a priori profile used in the retrievals are applied to the model simulated ozone profiles to allow direct comparison between the observations and model. We examine the consistency of the spatial and temporal variability of tropospheric ozone observed by TES with the model, focusing on the large-scale features such as the ozone maximum over the south Atlantic during September-October.
