TI: Measurements of Non-Methane Hydrocarbons as Oxidant Probes

Non-methane hydrocarbons (NMHCs) are ubiquitous in the
marine troposphere at trace concentrations. They have long
been postulated to originate from the degradation of
dissolved organic matter (DOM) in surface waters, and furthermore may elucidate the role of various oxidants in the
troposphere. Whole air, DOM in surface waters, and organic aerosols were simultaneously sampled on the RV Polarstern ARK-XX
cruise in the Greenland and Norwegian seas in the summer of 2004. Initial results focused on the air samples, which were
collected in electropolished stainless steel canisters and analyzed for NMHCs using a cryogenic preconcentration-GC apparatus
constructed in-house. These NMHC results indicate the relative importance of different oxidants in the air parcels sampled.
We will discuss the potential implications for the long-term goal of understanding the processes by which volatile organic
compounds may originate from marine DOM.
