Measurement of trace levels of nitrogen dioxide (NO$_{2}$) remains an important issue for increasing our understanding of
tropospheric ozone production and the distribution of precursor species. A fast-response, highly specific photolytic
converter for NO$_{2}$ using a light-emitting diode (LED) light source has been developed and characterized in both
laboratory experiments and measurements in ambient air. An overview of the technology will be presented, highlighting the
important features of the photolytic converter and its use with chemiluminescence detectors (nitric oxide [NO] + ozone
[O$_{3}$]). Performance tests conducted both in the laboratory and the field will be presented. Results from ambient
measurements of NO$_{2}$ in conjunction with other reactive nitrogen species and ozone from an aircraft platform will be
presented to demonstrate the converter performance and to explore the chemical relationships observed.
