TI: Franklin Lecture: Advances in Atmospheric Electricity and Lightning Research

AB: Prof. Philip Krider will deliver the first of a new lecture series, the Franklin Lecture (named after Benjamin Franklin). Krider is a Fellow of the American Geophysical Union and past president of the International Commission on Atmospheric Electricity, and led the group that developed the first gated, wideband magnetic direction finders that are now the basis of the U.S. National Lightning Detection Network. The spatial and temporal development of lightning flashes on a regional and global scale will be reviewed together with the luminous and electrical development of intracloud, cloud-to-ground, and cloud-to-air discharges. The results of recent research on the stepped-leader and the attachment process will also be reviewed together with measurements of the efficacy of Franklin rods for lightning protection.
