AB: Ecosystem modeling and satellite remote sensing are being used in combination to assess activities such as land use change and afforestation on carbon pools and fluxes across the United States. The main objectives of this research and application are to: 1) evaluate major forest and agricultural sinks of atmospheric carbon dioxide using NASA EOS satellite data and ecosystem modeling, 2) support U. S. Government interagency programs for voluntary greenhouse gas emissions reductions, and 3) develop an internet-based decision support tools for users nationwide. A new combination of ecosystem carbon modeling with CASA (Carnegie-Ames-Stanford Approach) and high-resolution land cover mapping of the country by the MODIS satellite sensor was used to estimate potential carbon sequestration rates in croplands and rangelands resulting from potential future afforestation activities. The high level of spatial detail produced from this remote sensing analysis permits state-level (and possibly finer) assessments of the areas best suited to crop and rangeland afforestation efforts, with results relevant to the North American Carbon Program.
