TI: Seasonality of precipitation and its effect on amount weighted annual average isotopic values: a sensitivity study

AB: Many studies have highlighted temperature as the primary parameter controlling year-to-year variability in the concentration of stable isotopes of precipitation. However, for some regions, interpreting an isotope record solely with an isotope thermometer is shortsighted and possibly improper. The timing of precipitation throughout the year is a potentially potent influencing factor on annual isotopic values. For 63 sites within the United States we calculated time-series amount weighted annual isotopic values, based on 21 to 31 years of monthly precipitation data and site-specific sine curves idealizing seasonal isotope trends. The idealized isotopic trends were derived from four years of empirical isotopic data archived within the United States Network for Isotopes in Precipitation database and the precipitation data was sourced from the National Climate Data Center database. The derived time-series isolate the potential affect that the timing of precipitation, varying from one year to the next, may have on isotopic archives of annual resolution or greater.
