Considering that the intensity and frequency of recurrent extreme events associated with flooding, droughts and freezes
observed in the tropical Peruvian Andes could change with future global warming, an effort has begun to: (1) investigate the
causes of such extreme events using correlation and principal component analysis; (2) generate future climate scenarios using
statistical and dynamical downscaling; (3) integrate with the studies of vulnerability and adaptation strategies in the
region. The purpose of this paper is to describe the results of this effort, which is part of the national plan to strengthen
the capacity to manage the impacts of climate change.
