TI: Draw-Down of Metals During a Spring Phytoplankton Bloom in South San Francisco Bay

This research measured concentrations of Co, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn during a South San Francisco Bay (South Bay) spring bloom to
evaluate the role of phytoplankton in metal uptake and cycling. Water samples (dissolved and total) were collected using
trace-metal clean techniques during 10 cruises at 3 sites in the South Bay channel. Vertical profiles of the water column
were conducted by Jim Cloern's group from the United States Geological Survey. The spring 2003 bloom was a roughly 40 day
period of high hytoplankton biomass when chlorophyll-a concentrations peaked at $>$150 $\mu$g/L at station 36 in the extreme
South Bay. Principal Component Analysis was used to reduce the variables to 3 diagnostic factors that were then used to
characterize processes governing the biogeochemical cycles of trace elements in the bay. These statistical analyses
demonstrated that concentrations of some elements (e.g. Ni and Pb) were depleted during the spring bloom whereas others (e.g.
Cu) were not. These results are consistent with other studies on the speciation and bioavailability of different trace
elements in San Francisco Bay.
