Inherent optical properties (IOPs) depend solely on the optically important in-water constituents, colored dissolved organic
matter (CDOM), phytoplankton, and non-algal particles. As such, their variability is controlled by physical, chemical, and
biological processes. Here we will examine the roles of these processes with IOPs measured as part of the University of New
Hampshire's center for Coastal Ocean Observation and Analysis (COOA) monthly cruises. Much of the data was collected with a
custom IOP profiling package (Wetlabs Inc.) equipped with attenuation and absorption meters, fluorometers, backscattering
meters, and a CTD. Intermediate nephaloid layers in enclosed basins were among the interesting features observed.
