TI: Transforming Away the Cross Term in Quasilinear Diffusion

Two dimensional quasilinear diffusion can play an important role in wave-particle interactions, e.g. in stormtime
acceleration of electrons. The appropriate diffusion coefficients have been calculated, but time-dependent solution of the
diffusion equation is numerically difficult because of the often large and rapidly varying cross term. Transforming to
variables aligned with the eigenvectors of the diffusion matrix leads the cross term to vanish, which is a large physical,
mathematical, and numerical simplification. Details of the transformation and physical interpretation will be presented,
along with application to a model problem.
