AB: Most tropospheric aerosols are comprised of several different chemical compounds that can at times be distributed across multiple phases within the particles themselves. Knowledge of the composition and structure of such particles is important for a number of reasons including insight into their roles in atmospheric chemistry and their interaction with electromagnetic radiation. Although different analytical methods can be used to elucidate composition and structure of particulate matter, this work focuses on the use of aerosol extinction spectroscopy to determine these properties for particles made from two immiscible compounds namely oleic acid and water. Reported here are results and limitations of such analyses on model bi-component aerosols, and the feasibility of extending these methods to more complex systems.
