In this study, we present a comparison of modeled chemical processing in polluted forest canopies using the
Regional Atmospheric Chemistry Mechanism, Version 2 and SAPRC07. The comparison involves a number of
field studies, one, for example, was conducted at a forested site near Oak Ridge, TN during the summer of 1999.
The sites were under the influence of nitrogen oxide and hydrocarbon emissions from suburban automobile
traffic. Air chemistry measurements (e.g., ozone, NOx and VOC) and meteorological measurements were
collected within and above the forest canopies. A comparison of the degree of chemical processing by HO and
NO3 radicals and O3 for biogenic compounds, and the amount of HOx formation between the two mechanisms is
presented.
