The overall magnitude of the isotopic composition of stratosphere ozone is ~100 per mil, which is large
compared with that commonly known in atmospheric chemistry and geochemistry. Using the one- and two-
dimensional CalTech/JPL KINETICS models of the middle atmosphere, which include both formation and
photolysis processes of ozone, we found that the calculated δ49-O3 and δ50-O3 are about
10~15 per mil larger than the measurements (Krankowsky et al. 2007). We propose that the ~10 per
mil differences between the model and observations may be caused by the temperature variations. Our model
shows that a reduction of ~20K in the reference temperature profile could adequately reproduce the
observations. By incorporating NCEP daily temperature into our models, better agreement between model and
measurements is achieved. We attribute the residuals to a possible diurnal variation in temperature. Sensitivity
studies have been carried out to explore the temperature dependence of the isotopic composition of ozone in the
stratosphere.
