Although the hydroxyl radical is generally considered to be the dominant daytime oxidizing species in the
troposphere, there is increasing evidence that halogen atoms are also significant oxidants in coastal areas. The
importance of reactive halogen species (RHS), such as chlorine atoms and bromine and iodine oxides, is not
well characterized, partly due to the few observations of RHS in the atmosphere. A collaborative field
measurement campaign was conducted in October 2006 in Malibu, CA to measure a suite of trace gases,
including halogen molecules, halogen oxides, Cl + VOC reaction products, aerosol composition, ozone, nitrogen
oxides, carbon monoxide, and others. An atmospheric pressure ionization mass spectrometer was used to
detect molecular bromine and iodine in the marine boundary layer during that field experiment. The results of
those measurements are presented here.
