TI: Thunderstorm Precipitation Current Measurements

AB: Precipitation currents inside and below thunderstorms and electrified shower clouds are thought to be important contributors to the global electric circuit. Using balloon measurements, we find precipitation current densities of both polarities inside four mature stage storms range from 10-40 nA/m2. Measurements in one decaying storm give precipitation currents of only 1-2 nA/m2 (of both polarities) during the End-Of-Storm-Oscillation (EOSO). From these data we estimate the storm-scale precipitation current and compare the results to earlier estimates of this parameter in the global circuit.
