A new composite material is presented for the catalytic, reductive transformation of many types of water
contaminants. This material may be further mixed with an inert and/or active macroscopic scaffold, such as
vermiculite, to optimize hydraulic properties. The composite material contains combinations of nanosized zero
valent metals, electron mediators and natural support matrices. The composite materials are shown to degrade
or transform various water contaminants with high oxidation states to relatively benign compounds. Physical,
chemical and hydrological properties of the composite material are discussed, along with surface properties and
composition. Measurements of transformation kinetics are demonstrated for several typical, persistent organic
and metal contaminants in aqueous solutions.
