The ecology and trace metal geochemistry of living benthic foraminifera in the Venice Lagoon was assessed as
part of an ongoing international effort examining biological and biogeochemical responses to environmental
changes in Lagoonal sediments (SIOSED). The "SIOSED" project is part of a comprehensive effort to support the
integrated management of Venice Lagoon sediments and ecosystems promoted by the Venice Water Authority
through its Concessionary, Consorzio Venezia Nuova. Living (Rose Bengal-stained) benthic foraminiferal
assemblages (greater than 150 microns) were dominated by Ammonia tepida, Haynesina germanica,
and Quinqueloculina sp. Differences in spatial and vertical distribution patterns of these foraminiferal taxa
appear to reflect differences in the availability of contaminants. Laser ablation ICPMS analyses of Mn, Mg, Zn, Pb,
As, Cd, Al, and V in foraminiferal calcite showed that some trace element concentration ratios, particularly
zinc/calcium, varied between sites and between species. Differences in trace metal signatures from foraminifera
living at different sites may be related to bioavailable pollutant concentrations and/or to redox processes that
release adsorbed trace metals from reducible phases (e.g., iron oxides). Results provide calibration data for
contaminant proxies of spatial and temporal environmental differences.
