TI: Impacts of Technology-Based Differentiated Instruction on Students with Special Needs

AB: In early 2006, the Lawrence Hall of Science (LHS) conducted a national field-test of a new GEMS space science curriculum package developed for use with middle school students. During this field-test we modified a subset of the curriculum materials for use by students with special needs, to be delivered via computer. These computer-based modules were implemented in a subset of the field-test classrooms, and LHS collected pre- and post-test data for each unit. We analyzed the data to determine if students in the classrooms using the modified materials scored differently than students in the larger assessment data base. We disaggregated the date to specifically measure the impact on students with special needs. Our results suggest that many students, not just those with special needs, demonstrate greater achievement gains using materials modified using the principles of best practice for special needs students.
