TI: Environmental Impacts of C02 Storage

AB: \begin{document} The electric power industry is investigating the feasibility of storing carbon dioxide (CO2) for the long term in deep geologic formations suited to that purpose. Much of the technology needed for engineered CO2 storage has been developed by those engaged in oil and gas exploration and production, but the quantity of CO2 that will be involved under a nationwide program of CO2 capture and storage from power plants dwarfs the current experience base with enhanced oil recovery. Therefore, it is important to consider the potential environmental impacts of such an undertaking. These impacts may include releases to air from the storage site or transportation system and to groundwater from the injection formation. Impacts can also be secondary in nature, such as induced seismicity (earthquakes). Research will focus on these potential environmental impacts individually, indicating for each what is known about the impact, what data gaps exist, and what research should be conducted to eliminate/minimize the gaps. The focus of research will be on environmental impacts in the event the injected CO2 escapes from its transport or storage containment or causes indirect effects such as earth movement and on the potential risks of such behaviors and consequent impacts. Other studies will focus on engineering methods, such as modeling and monitoring, to mitigate these potential occurrences. \end{document}
