TI: Simulation of Paleoclimate Impacts on Groundwater Elevations in The Southern High Plains Of Texas

Modern computer models of groundwater flow and contaminant transport now allow us to simulate complex
heterogeneous aquifer systems. Pre- and post-processors readily enable variations of geologic and hydrologic
parameters. When hydraulic properties of subsurface materials are known, the models can be used to test "what
if" scenarios. In this project, groundwater modeling was used to test the sensitivity of the Southern High Plains
aquifer system to hydrologic factors affected by climate change, specifically recharge and evapotranspiration. In
addition, groundwater modeling was used to establish the necessary temporal variations in climate over the last
50,000 years that account for the water table fluctuations described by the lunette sediments at the Double Lakes
site. This work was the first in this region to represent impacts of long-term meteorological changes on
groundwater levels.
