AB: Through its vertical and local interaction with soil-vegetation, and through its lateral and regional redistribution of near-surface surplus, the groundwater links the various terrestrial reservoirs and influences them at its own spatial and temporal scales. Here we present evidence (theoretical, observational, and modeling) that groundwater storage and fluxes control soil moisture, river flow, and wetland distribution over a continent. We note that without the explicit representation of the water table dynamics in our climate models, continental drainage is disconnected with the sea level, making it difficult to understand the coupling and feedbacks among the various components of the earth's climate system.
