JPL is developing a transportable gravity gradiometer based on light-pulse atom interferometers for NASA's Earth
Science Technology Office's Instrument Incubator Program.
The inertial sensors in this instrument employ a quantum interference measurement technique, analogous to the
precise phase measurements in atomic clocks, which offers increased sensitivity and improved long-term
stability over traditional mechanical devices.
We report on the implementation of this technique in JPL's gravity gradiometer,
and on the current performance of the mobile instrument.
We also discuss the prospects for satellite-based gravity field mapping, including high-resolution monitoring of
time-varying fields from a single satellite platform and multi-component measurements of the gravitational
gradient tensor, using atom interferometer-based instruments.
