AB: Three high frequency radar instruments (CODAR) began monitoring sea surface currents in the Gulf of the Farallones off the Coast of San Francisco, California in May 2006 as part of the State Coastal Conservancy funded Coastal Ocean Currents Monitoring Program (COCMP). This has provided an unprecedented spatial and temporal view of sea surface currents in this region. Previous studies have examined the complex surface currents in the Gulf of the Farallones using moored acoustic Doppler current profilers (ADCPs) and ship-mounted ADCPs but these studies did not have as long a time frame nor the spatial and temporal resolution that is now available with HF radar. One of the aims of this project is to develop and test a process in which harmonic tidal analyses are performed to separate out calculated tidal currents from HF radar measured currents. A second goal of this project is to measure cross-shore characteristics of tidal currents. These characteristics include variations in tidal forcing, subtidal forcing, and wind forcing, along with the orientation and rotation of tidal ellipses.
