In order to meet the requirement of the Law of the Sea, we have conducted a survey of multi-beam bathymetry and
magnetic data during a continental shelf survey in northwestern corner of the West Philippine Basin. The
bathymetric images show obvious fracture zones trending NE-SW. Post-spreading volcanism is found in this
region; some sea-mounts are across a fracture zone but some are truncated by a fracture zone. It suggests in fact
the different stages of volcanism. In addition to obvious spreading fabrics, overlapping spreading features are
also found in the northern part of the study area. The bathymetric depressions close to the Gagua Ridge in the
west and Ryukyu Trench in the north are filled by deep-sea sediments.
We have compiled the newly collected magnetic data and reduced the data by IGRF model. The magnetic data
are then inverted to get the equivalent magnetization distribution of the study region. We have also conducted an
age model simulation to infer the probable age of the oceanic crust of the northwestern corner of the West
Philippine Basin.
