We present SHARAD investigation results on an extensive region of
Mars near the equator that show evidence of shallow radio-
transparent deposits. The first radar sounding data over this area was collected by MARSIS showing evidence of
radio-transparency but we were not able to
resolve the depth since the depth resolution of MARSIS is approximately 80 meters. SHARAD is able to resolve
these deposits thanks to its higher
bandwidth providing approximately 10 times better depth resolution.
We have obtained observations with sufficient density to
allow mapping the bed/deposit interface. Also, the reflection
properties of the radio waves are analyzed to provide clues about
the nature of the material filling the Elysium Planitia. Elysium
Planitia is located east of the "Frozen Sea" region where is the
focus of debate regarding its nature.
The MARSIS radar sounder operates over 4 bands between
1.3 MHz and 5.5 MHz and has a maximum bandwidth of 1 MHz. SHARAD
operates between 15 MHz and 25 MHz with a maximum bandwidth of 10
MHz.
