Reconstructions of the Indian Summer Monsoon over the past 2,000 years reveal abrupt changes from one
century to the next. Persistence of these natural changes into the future would challenge societies that are
adapted to a narrow range of climate variability. New paleoclimate records of the Indian Summer Monsoon winds
over the past few thousand years were derived from Arabian Sea sediments, and we compared them with other
records of the monsoon, including cave deposits from Oman and India, and pollen records from Sri Lanka to
create a more complete picture of century scale trends. The monsoon winds were stronger, and the ITCZ located
northward, during a warm interval sometimes termed the Medieval Warm Period. The monsoon winds were
weaker, and the ITCZ located farther south during the Little Ice Age, when the northern latitudes were cooler. This
study reveals a natural oscillation in the monsoon upon which future change might be superimposed, and also
indicates a potential relationship between northern warming (induced by greenhouse gas accumulation), the
monsoons, and the ITCZ.
