AB: It is well known that Mg can exert strong influence on the crystal morphology of different carbonate phases and therefore play an important role in the biomineralization process of marine carbonate skeletons. However, very little is known about the chemical speciation of Mg in these carbonate skeletons. We have initiated an X-ray Absorption Near Edge Structure spectrocopy (XANES) study of a variety of marine carbonate skeletons and report striking differences in the chemical speciation of Mg.
