Thermal anomaly before earthquake was widely studied with satellite data such as AVHRR and MODIS. A big
disadvantage is that satellite thermal data can not penetrate thick clouds to retrieve surface temperature, and the
distance between thermal anomaly and future epicenter is too far to estimate the possible epicenter. Here we first
introduced NCEP Reanalysis data which is widely used in atmosphere research area, found the possible
thermal anomalies before earthquakes, and in this research the distance between thermal anomaly and future
epicenter is about 1degree. This method is easy, quick and low cost compared with the traditional geophysical
method. According to this anomaly we can verify the possible epicenter within an reasonable spatial error of
about 1 degree. If other geophysical method is combined with this method together, the false alarm may be
reduced and the accuracy may be promoted.
