Two eruptive flares that occurred on 17 December 2006 and 19 May 2007 were observed by the instruments on
the Hinode and RHESSI spacecraft. Both share some of the characteristics of the well known event observed with
Yohkoh in February, 1992 (Tsuneta et al., 1992) in that they seem largely thermal in character and exhibit many of
the features of the standard Carmichael, Hirayama, Sturrock, Kopp, Pneuman (CHSKP) flare model. However for
these events, much additional (e.g. SOHO) data is available including the observation of an associated erupting
filament on 19th May that was seen at the Kanzelhoehe Solar Observatory. In this talk the role of the outflow
termination shock in heating the flare plasma will be re-examined. In particular the presence of plasma over a
wide temperature range in the flare cusps and the possibility of non-thermal effects following the shock heating,
will be assessed. The behaviour of the erupting filament material will also be discussed.
