TI: Holocene paleoclimates of Canada north of 50°: Comparison with high-resolution multi-proxy

High-latitude regions are naturally more sensitive to climate perturbations due in part to strong surface albedo
feedback. In this study, we use a large network of modern and fossil pollen data to investigate climate variability
above 50°N in North America during the past 12,000 years. Climate variables such as July and January, and
annual precipitations are reconstructed at 100-year intervals to evaluate climate variability at several temporal and
spatial scales. Results show both low and high frequency climate variability occurring throughout the Holocene.
Climatologically reasonable space-time patterns are presented. Estimates of the range of climate variability on
time scales of 104 and 103 compare well with high-resolution continental to hemispheric scale temperature
reconstructions using multiple proxy records. High-latitude reconstructions show slightly higher sensitivity
compared to lower mid-latitude reconstructions. Recent observed regional warming is unprecedented in terms of
millennial-scale temperature variability found during the Holocene.
