AB: The surface waters of the Canadian Basin constitute a pool of buoyant, relatively fresh, waters that are important to the dynamics of the Arctic Ocean as well as to the vertical stratification of the Nordic and Labrador seas. In this contribution we use multiple tracers (isotopes of oxygen, helium and hydrogen as well as dissolved anthropogenic gases) to look at sources and residence times of the freshwater component of the upper 500 meters of the Canadian Basin. New data from the 2005 Arctic Ocean Sciences trans-Arctic cruise are presented and analyzed in the context of data from prior cruises. The data offer a more detailed illustration than previously available of the buoyancy sources and surprising horizontal gradients of the residence times in the buoyant lens over the Arctic.
