The comparison of aerosol optical depth (AOD) from MODIS and MISR sensors show high correlation for winter months (November,
December and January) over the Indo-Gangetic basin. The MODIS and MISR level-3 data show a very high AOD due to high
atmospheric pollutants that is found to be very dynamic in nature. The spatial variability over the basin is very much
dependent on the meteorological conditions and low topography of the basin. High AOD shifts from central part of the Ganga
basin towards eastern part of the basin near Kolkata with advance of winter season depending upon the wind circulation
pattern. We have also compared MODIS and MISR AOD with AERONET over Kanpur region. MODIS data shows a good correlation (0.7)
with AERONET compared those with MISR. The initial study reveals that MODIS AOD data is more reliable compared to MISR AOD
over Kanpur which is located in the central part of the basin. MODIS and MISR AOD show much higher AOD over the central part
of the basin in the year 2004 compared to other years 2000 - 2003.
