In northern forested ecosystems, the autumnal leaf fall constitutes the majority of carbon and nitrogen that enters headwater streams annually. This study compared small upland watersheds located in two types of land use categories in the Adirondack
Park; State Forest Preserve Lands, and lands that have been logged during the past 25 years. Riparian litter quality and
biomass amounts were estimated for each stream. Leaf Litter quality was determined from the results of previous studies on
individual species of litter. In-stream leaf packs were also sampled to assess invertebrate community assemblages, and leaf
pack species composition. Leaf packs in managed streams were composed mainly of high quality litter, although leaf packs in
Preserve streams had a higher abundance of macroinvertebrates. These data may have many important implications for ecosystem
energetics as it relates to land use practices.
