TI: The Modular Ocean Data Assimilation System (MODAS) Synthetic Ocean Environment

AB: The Modular Ocean Data Assimilation System (MODAS) is an integral part of ocean modeling and operational oceanography at the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) and Naval Oceanographic Office (NAVOCEANO). A core MODAS capability is its synthetic ocean environment based on historical covariances between surface and subsurface observations. The MODAS synthetics use measurements of sea surface height (SSH) and sea surface salinity (SST) to estimate subsurface temperature, salinity, and sound speed. An overview of the operational MODAS is given, with some assessment of its present performance and examples of potential shortcomings. These lead to a description of recent developments, ongoing work and planned upgrades to improve synthetic ocean environments.
