TI: Visible-Near Infra Red Spectroscopic Analysis of Black Peaks & Javalina Paleosols

AB: Paleosols from the Black Peaks formation (65-60 ma) and from the Javalina formation (70-65 ma) were sampled adjacent to the Big Bend National Park in Brewster county, Texas. They were examined for visible and near- infrared (0.4 - 2.2 µm) spectroscopic signatures using an Ocean Optics USB2000/NIR spectrometer. We discuss the mineral composition of the soils from the measured spectral signatures, and the influence of a laccolith intrusion at about 35 ma on mineral composition.
