The FM94 BUFR (Binary Universal Form for the Representation of meteorological data) is the binary form
established by World Meteorological Organization (WMO) to substitute the traditional alphanumeric codes, such
as SYNOP, TEMP, SHIP on the observed data transmission through the Global Telecommunication System
(GTS). In this work an overview about BUFR aspects is presented, including some computational tools which are
being developed at the Brazilian National Institute for Space Research (INPE), the type of BUFR data available
and the benefits to the weather forecast models. Another aspect which must be considered to the BUFR
implementation is the availability of training courses for users and the adaptation of the software to each
meteorological application.
