Because the analytical data of reference materials (RMs) have significantly increased in recent years, Jochum et
al. (2005) developed the geochemical GeoReM database for RMs of geological and environmental interest
(http:georem.mpch-mainz.gwdg.de). GeoReM is a relational database and contains published analytical,
compilation and certified values (major and trace element concentrations, radiogenic and stable isotope ratios),
important metadata about the analytical values, such as uncertainty, uncertainty type, method and laboratory.
Sample information and references are also included. At present (March 2007) GeoReM contains ca. 1300 RMs,
11000 analyses and 1600 publications. Five different queries are possible: (1) samples or materials, (2)
chemical criteria, (3) bibliography, and recently (4) samples (GeoReM preferred values, GPV), (5) methods or
institutions.
The GPV and their uncertainties were determined by the GeoReM database group. They are important for
calibration purposes and quality control. Criteria are primarily certified data, as well as data from high precision
and definitive methods, such as isotope dilution - thermal ionization mass spectrometry.
The new query "methods or institutions" provides lists of methods used in selected institutions and lists of
institutions using certain techniques. For example, it is possible to list all LA-ICP-MS, SIMS or MC-ICP-MS
laboratories stored in GeoReM, and to find out analytical techniques used in selected institutions including
detailed information about the elements, the isotope ratios measured and the RMs analyzed.
References available in GeoReM and GEOROC (Geochemistry of Rocks of the Oceans and Continents) are now
linked to each other (Schramm et al., 2006). It is possible to get information through GEOROC about the
geochemical analyses of rock samples belonging to analyses of RMs and isotopic standards compiled in
GeoReM. The detailed information of the analytical conditions available in GeoReM enables users of GEOROC to
estimate the quality of the analyzed rock samples.
