For the past eight years, the western half of the Arabian Sea has witnessed an almost 350 percent increase in
summer-time phytoplankton blooms due to strengthening of the southwest monsoon winds and intensification of
coastal upwelling linked to the warming trend over Eurasia. We have also observed that the warming trend is
undermining convective mixing responsible for nutrient enrichment during the boreal winter component of the
monsoon cycle, causing a decline in winter-time phytoplankton biomass in the eastern Arabian Sea. On the other
hand, the western Arabian Sea has been witnessing an increase in chlorophyll due to unprecedented blooms of
Noctiluca miliaris Suriray tied to mesoscale eddy activity and the uplift of subsurface, cooler, nutrient-rich and
oxygen poor waters seen early during the season off the coast of Oman.
