AB: he influence of the waves on the circulation of the Sistema Arrecifal Veracruzano and the beaches of Veracruz and Boca del Rio Counties is examined by using the NearCoM model. The surf zone wave-averaged circulation is forced primarily by the gradients of the radiation stress due to the breaking waves. Results show that a "valve effect" associated with mass convergence due to wave-induced currents is an important mechanism for the dispersion of contaminants in the beaches with coral barriers.
