AB: Upwelling interannual variation study was conducted in Baja California peninsula based on several parameters. Wind stress (upwelling index), Sea Surface Temperature (SST), Area Sea Surface Temperature (15°C), Sea Surface High (SSH) and, Chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) data were analyzed in order to compare ENSO conditions between 1997 and 2003. Our result indicate that SST and SSH were expected to ENSO conditions. Upwellings index was high during weak El Nino 2003 and less evident during La Nina 1998-2001 events. On the other hand, Chl-a biomass was 50% lower during El Nino 1997-98 than records of La Nina 1998-2001 and showed its maximum value during transition conditions in 2002. Chl-a biomass was similar in El Nino 2003 and La Nina 1998-2001. Our data do not match with the current proposed hypothesis that El Nino depress primary productivity (PP), while La Niña promotes high PP. These conditions are according only with the strong El Nino 1997-1998 in the southern California Current System; however during weak-to moderate events the conditions area variable in the region and inter-events. This supports the idea that southern CCS is also modulated by different inter-annual oscillations, as the North Pacific Decadal Oscillation.
