Running GEODAS User Access Software

MS Windows

First Install GEODAS for MS Windows

You can run the various GEODAS applications from the MS Window Start button.
i.e. Start ->; Programs -> GEODAS -> GEODAS Application

For Marine Trackline Geophysics and NOS Hydrographic Surveys data sets you should start with the GEODAS Search application.

For GEODAS Gridded Databases such as Coastal Relief Model, Great Lakes Bathymetry and ETOPO2 you will need to be sure that the appropriate CD/DVD is loaded, and then start the appropriate application, which will launch your Browser. (e.g. Start -> Task -> GEODAS -> Coastal Relief Model

You may also run the other various applications directly from the Windows Start Menu, such as Grid Translator, Hydro-Plot, and Coastline Extractor.

Each GEODAS Application has extensive context-sensitive Help.

UNIX Xwindows

First Install GEODAS for Xwindows and then follow these steps to run the GEODAS Software:

  1. Start the GEODAS Launch Pad by typing geodas at the command prompt of your xterm window. (The program folder will have to be in your PATH environment variable)
    >geodas



  2. Click the GEODAS icon you wish to run. These icons represent the various GEODAS Applications/Databases databases. Note that only those applications and databases which you have installed will be enabled. The GEODAS Applications are:
    GEODAS Data Search and Retrieval
    NGDC Coastal Relief Model
    Great Lakes Bathymetry
    ETOPO2 Global Elevation Grids
    GEODAS Grid Translator
    GEODAS Coastline Extractor
    GEODAS Hydro-Plot
    GEODAS Help System

Note: There are 2 additional utility applications installed with GEODAS. Simply type the application name at the command prompt.
geodas-gridlist will list contents of NGDC Binary Formatted Coastal Relief Model Grids.
geodas-hdrecs77 will combine separate MGD77 Header and MGD77 Data files into a single file.
