Instructions for Installing Acrobat Reader and Using Acrobat Search Engine
Acrobat Reader SoftwareFor your convenience, we have included a free distribution of Acrobat Reader 4.0 in the directory ACROBAT in the Digital Archive. Please check the contents for the exact location of this software. Acrobat Reader will enable you to view the PDF files whereas the "Search" function will provide for a global full-text search across all the PDF files in the Digital Archive. If you already have Acrobat Reader 4.0, please make sure that it has the search function by looking for an icon which shows binoculars with a document in the background. If such an icon is not present on your Acrobat Reader, it is essential that you install the Acrobat Reader software included in the Digital Archive so that you can gain access to the global search functionality. Please note that the Acrobat Search function is not available from wihtin your browser when you use Acrobat Reader as a plug-in. You have to lanunch the Acrobat Reader externally to be able to access the search functionality. Acrobat Reader 4.0 Software Installation: ACROBAT contains a directory for your specific platform which includes the Acrobat Reader+Search software. Brief instructions for installing this software onto your hard disk follow. Please see the README file accompanying the Acrobat Reader for more information. Macintosh VersionCopy the file rs405eng.bin from the ACROBAT/MAC directory onto your hard drive. Unstuff the file using Stuffit Expander or any other common decompression utility. (The Stuffit Expander freeware can be downloaded from www.aladdinsys.com/expander/). Once the Reader+Search installer has been extracted, double click on it and follow the on-screen instructions.Microsoft Windows VersionFor Windows 95, 98, NT or 2000 systems: Double click on the file rs405eng.exe in the directory ACROBAT\WINDOWS and follow the onscreen instructions.Unix VersionTo install the reader+search for your platform, first find the reader in the proper directory for your operating system. This will be one of the following:
Located in each of these folders will be a gnu zipped tar file. Note: You will need gzip to perform this installation. To unarchive the installer, type the following command from a directory to which you have write permission: gzip -d < filename.gz | tar xf - where "filename" is the platform specific gnu zip file containing the reader. This will create a "[platform].install" folder pertaining to your system in the current working directory. Next, change directory to the .install folder, and type: ./INSTALL to install the reader. Further information on installation can be found in the unarchived installer directory in the file named INSTGUID.TXT Acrobat Search EnginePlease refer to the Acrobat reader online guide for more extensive information on how to use Acrobat Reader+Search. Below you will find a brief account of Acrobat search functionality. Find: Acrobat PDF files are in searchable format. You can search within each individual file using the Acrobat Find function. Find function can be accessed from Edit or by clicking on the binocular (without a document in the background) icon on the tool bar. Full-Text Search Index: In addition, the Digital Archive comes with a combined full-text index for all the PDF files included in the Digital Archive. The index file is in the directory pdfindex in the ACROBAT directory which also contains the Acrobat Reader software. To use the full text index, you may have to do a one-time loading of the file ACROBAT/pdfindex/index.pdx. Use Edit > Search > Select Indexes to obtain the dialog box for loading indexes. Use the Add button and go to the pdfindex directory in the ACROBAT directory to load the index.pdx file. This dialog box can also be selected by clicking the Search icon in the toolbar and then using the Indexes button. The search engine doesn't use umlauts, accents, etc. on characters. So to search for "Günther", you would just enter "gunther".
Searching with Document Info and Date Info:Each PDF file is loaded with title, subject, author, keyword, and creation-date attributes. Creation-date field contains the publication date of the corresponding article. For example, articles in March 1998 issue will have the creation date 3/1/1998. Modification-date is the date at which the PDF file was last modified and may not be relevant for search. The subject field is filled with the subject heading (when available) under which the article is displayed in the table of contents. The keyword field is loaded with the keywords of the article when available.You can use Document and Date Info in the Search dialog box to limit your search. For example, you can limit your search to documents authored by one person and created (published) within a given period or on a given date. You can view the document and date information (if any) provided by choosing File > Doc Info > General from within the PDF document.
To search using Document Info:In the Search dialog box, enter your search query information in the appropriate title, subject, author, and keywords text boxes. You can use Boolean operators and wild-card characters in these text boxes, with the search text. All documents that contain the value are returned. If the With Document Info text boxes are not displayed in your Search dialog box, choose File > Preferences > Search, and select Show Fields.
