Hisaaki Maeda (M'93-SM'98) received the B.S. degree in naval architecture from the University of Tokyo, Tokyo, Japan, in 1964, the M.S. degree in 1966, and the Ph.D. degree in ocean engineering from the University of Tokyo in 1969.

He has been a Professor with the Institute of Industrial Science, University of Tokyo, since 1969. His specialties are marine hydrodynamics, dyanamics of floating structures, wave energy utilization, dynamics and control of underwater vehicles, safety engineering for marine facilities, and development of aquaculture facilities. He holds four patents, which include wave energy devices, floating-type wave breakers, and control devices for underwater vehicles. He has published more than 200 technical papers. He has served as an ad hoc committee of the Ministry of Transport, the Ministry of Education, and the Science and Technology Agency of Japan. He has been an adviser of the Japan Panel of the Marine Facilities Panel of the US-Japan Cooperative Program in Natural Resources (UJNR/MFP) since 1989. He has been a member of the International Committee of Practical Design of Ship and Offshore Structures (PRADS) since 1989 and a member of the International Advisory Committee of the Offshore Mechanics and Arctic Engineering (OMAE) of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) since 1985.

Dr. Maeda is a fellow of the Society of Naval Architects of Japan (SNAJ) and a member of the Marine Technology Society, the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers, the Society of Architects of Japan, the Society of Energy and Resources of Japan, and the Society of Coastal Development of Japan. He is a member of the Administrative Committee of the IEEE Oceanic Engineering Society and an Associate Editor of the IEEE Journal of O ceanic Engineering. He served as a Conference Co-Chair of UT'98. He received the best paper award from SNAJ in 1982, the OMAE achievement award from ASME in 1986, and awards from the Sasakawa Foundation and the Shipbuilding Industries Association. He also received the award from the U.S. Panel for his contribution to the UJNR/MFP activities in 1994.
