Thomas W. Conway received the B.S. degree in electrical engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Worcester, MA, and the M.S. degree in ocean and marine environmental engineering from the State University of New York at Stonybrook.He worked with Grumman Aerospace, Marine Ocean Systems, as Project Engineer on such programs as hydrological studies, bottom surveys with Grumman's submersible, and NASA's Orbiting Astronomical Observatory. He joined International Underwater Contractors, Inc. (IUC), City Island, NY, in 1973 as a Senior Electronic Engineer responsible for all electronic and sonar rigging on IUC's deep-diving submersibles, diving systems, ROV's, and surface survey equipment. His responsibilities included research, design, and fabrication of new underwater inspection and survey systems for closed-circuit television, gyroscopic alignment and navigation, sonar ranging, obstacle avoidance and tracking, bottom and subbottom survey equipment, and remote-control systems for all types of underwater inspection and surveys. He is now General Sales Manager with the added responsibilities of marketing, estimating, and sales of IUC's range of underwater services.
